improvisation on bowls and snares
by Madalena Rato
This improvisation explores the interaction between sound waves and snares. By bowing singing bowls on top of snare drums, the snares will vibrate and create different chords. Furthermore, because there is more than one bowl and snare drum, it is possible to listen to the soundwaves from the bowl interacting and influencing not only with the drum that’s below it but with the others as well. The shape of the soundwaves can also be heard as the snares turn on and off by themselves, depending on the intensity of the vibration. The music itself arises from these interactions and is, in part, non-controllable.
